The footballer’s death was confirmed on Monday night, but little else is known about the circumstances.

The news surfaced just before Lithuania’s Euro 2024 qualifying match against Hungary on Tuesday night. Currently, the national squad is bottom of their qualification group.

According to Lithuanian media, the police are now involved and in control of the background inquiry.

The midfielder made 20 appearances for the national team during his playing career, with his most recent appearance coming in 2019.

Karolis Chvedukas, a Lithuanian who played for various clubs, died at 32.

Chvedukas died unexpectedly, according to the Lithuanian Football Association, on Monday.

“In this difficult hour, the Lithuanian Football Federation expresses its deepest condolences to the relatives and friends of the deceased,” they added.

Chvedukas appeared in 20 games for the Lithuanian national team. He scored 23 goals in 170 games for FK Sduva, helping the team win the Lithuanian Cup and Lithuanian Supercup in 2009.

In the League of Ireland, he played for Waterford F.C. and Dundalk F.C. Former Dundalk coach Stephen O’Donnell handled the tragic news in a club statement.

“I lived in Belfry Drive with Karolis during his time in Dundalk,” O’Donnell said, “and it was terrible news to receive on Monday, really shocking; Karolis was a great character around the place.”

Chvedukas played with Marijampol City in Lithuania during his domestic career, however, he has only made one appearance for the squad since arriving in March 2023.

Chvedukas had been without a club for a long time before then, having left Finnish club Kokkolan PV in January 2022.

Dundalk F.C., an Irish Premier Division team that Chvedukas played for one season in 2018, honored the ‘Beast from the East’ in a post.

The “Beast from the East,” as the Lithuanian international was dubbed, joined Dundalk from Suduva in 2018 and appeared in 12 games for the club.

Another of his former teams, FK Suduva Marijampole, paid tribute to Chvedukas on Instagram, writing, “Thanks for all the goals and good memories.”
