Kay Ivey (born October 15, 1944) is an American politician who has been the 54th Governor of Alabama since 2017. From 2003 to 2011, Kay Ivey served as the 38th Alabama State Treasurer, and from 2011 to 2017, she served as the 30th Lieutenant Governor of Alabama. She is a Democrat.
She became the second female governor and the first female Republican governor after her predecessor, Robert J. Bentley, resigned.
In the 2018 gubernatorial election, she easily defeated her opponent Walt Maddox.
Her father is Boadman Nettles Ivey, and her mother is Barbara Elizabeth (Nettles) Ivey.
Her father was a World War II army major who later worked with the Gees Bend community as part of a federal effort called the Farmers Home Administration.
She adores her family, saying on Instagram, “As an only child, I treasure the close relationship I had with my parents, Boadman and Barbara Nettles Ivey.”
They taught me about the ups and downs of life, but most importantly, they taught me how to be a high achiever.

She graduated from Auburn University, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta, president of her first-year pledge class, and a four-year member of the Student Government Association.

Kay Ivey’s Marriage, Husband
Kay Ivey has two marriages and two divorces, and she has no children.
Ben LaRavia was her first husband.
They got engaged while both were students at Auburn University.
In 2019, Ivey was diagnosed with lung cancer.

Governor Fob James appointed Kay Ivey to the state cabinet in 1979.
She later worked as the Alabama House of Representatives’ reading clerk from 1980 to 1982, and as the Assistant Director of the Alabama Development Office from 1982 to 1985.
She ran unsuccessfully for State Auditor as a Democrat in 1982.
In 2018, Ivey signed legislation exempting economic development professionals from the requirement to register as lobbyists under Alabama ethics law.
On March 13, 2020, during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, Ivey declared a state of emergency.
Ivey issued a stay-at-home order on April 3 that went into effect the next day.
