He worked a variety of odd jobs as a child, earning as little as $9 per week at times. Rogers attended the University of Houston after graduating from high school.

Kenneth Rogers began his musical career in the 1950s, experimenting with a variety of musical styles before breaking into the industry. He rose to prominence with his 1957 hit “That Crazy Feeling,” before branching out into jazz, country-pop, and psychedelic rock over the next few years.
Rogers was a member of the “Bobby Doyle Three” jazz group in the 1960s. Although the group eventually disbanded after a few years, their hit “Here’s That Rainy Day” gave them significant exposure.
Rogers began working as a producer, writer, and session musician for other artists near the end of the 1960s. He then joined the New Christy Minstrels as a double bass player, but left after the band failed to make it.
He and a few other members of the group later formed the First Edition, which was later renamed “Kenny Rogers and the First Edition.” This band had a number of successful singles, including “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In).” The song was famously featured in the film “The Big Lebowski,” starring Jeff Bridges, during a memorable dream sequence.
During this time, he and the First Edition had numerous hits, including “But You Know I Love You,” “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town,” “Tell It All, Brother,” “Rueben James,” and “Something’s Burning.”
When the group disbanded in 1976, he went on to have a successful solo career, appealing to both pop and country audiences.
“Love Lifted Me” was his debut album as a solo artist. The title track and many others did well on the charts, and Rogers followed up with a self-titled album later that year. His single “Lucille” was a huge success, topping the charts in 12 different countries. Many of Rogers’ albums went platinum over the next few years as a result of his mainstream success.
He began working with Dottie West on a number of projects toward the end of the 1970s, including songs like “Every Time Two Fools Collide,” “Anyone Who Isn’t Me Tonight,” “What Are We Doin’ in Love,” “All I Ever Need Is You,” and “Till I Can Make It On My Own.” West’s successful spree ended in 1991 when he was killed in a car accident.
Throughout the 1980s, Rogers collaborated on a number of successful hits with singers such as Dolly Parton, Kim Carnes, Sheena Easton, Lionel Richie, and Lynda Carter.
Richie and Rogers collaborated on songs like “Lady” and the album “Share Your Love.” Sheena Easton appeared on Rogers’ chart-topping single “We’ve Got Tonight.”
He won a Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for his track “Make No Mistake, She’s Mine,” which featured Ronnie Milsap, near the end of the decade.
Rogers bounced back and started creating hits again after signing with Capitol Records in the 2000s. During this time, he also did a lot of touring.
