He was the youngest of three boys born to Sharon Rae, a charity worker, and his father, William Costner, an electrician.

He is descended from German, English, Irish, and Scottish ancestors. He was more interested in athletics, music, and poetry as a child than in his education.

He spent his adolescence in several locations in California. He attended Mt. Whitney High School in Visalia and later graduated from Villa Park High School in Orange County in 1973.

Professional Career of Kevin Costner

Costner made his film debut in 1978 with Hot Malibu Summer, which was released in 1981 after a long delay and was re-released five years later as Sizzle Beach in 1987.

Much later, after appearing in several films, Costner landed a major role in The Untouchables as federal agent Eliot Ness.

He also participated in the films Bull Durham and Field of Dreams in 1988 and 1989, respectively.

In 1990, he co-founded Tig Productions and directed and starred in the epic picture Dances with Wolves, which was released by Tig Productions.

This picture received 12 Academy Award nominations and won seven of them, including the two that he received, Best Picture and Best Director.

In the same year, he co-starred with Anthony Quinn in Revenge. The next year, he appeared in Robin Hood and JFK. The Bodyguard was released in 1992, followed by A Perfect World in 1993.

He starred in the biopic Wyatt Earp in 1994 and another film, The War, in 1995. In 1995, he directed Waterworld, and in 1997, he directed The Postman.
