Though not as well-known as Gunnar Kaasen and his dog Balto, who handled the last leg of the trip to Nome, he travelled almost twice the distance of other mushers with as many as 24 dogs. He inherited his first sled dogs through a friend, who originally intended them for the polar explorer Roald Amundsen, before his expedition was cancelled.
