Sonego then defeated Robin Haase at the 2018 Australian Open to begin his Grand Slam career.

As a Lucky Loser, Sonego defeated world No. 1, Novak Djokovic, in straight sets, 6-2 6-1, in the 2020 Erste Bank Open.

Djokovic suffered his third defeat of the season. Sonego reached the tournament final but lost to fifth seed Andrey Rublev 4-6, 4-6.

The Italian national won both the singles and doubles titles at the 2021 Sardegna Open in April.
