She worked there for two years, from 1986 to 1988, before going to Charlotte, North Carolina, to work for WBTV.

After another two years, she moved to WBFF-TV in Baltimore, where she worked as a street reporter and crime reporter until landing her first full-time anchor job as the anchor of WJLA-nightly TV’s newscasts in Washington, DC.

She worked with the company until 1996, when she moved to MSNBC, where she became one of the first anchors of the 24-hour cable news channel, as well as the first African-American to speak on the network, and covered various high-profile news items throughout her time there.

Stokes eventually joined to ABC, where he worked with Robb Hanrahan to replace Nancy Loo and David Ushery as anchors. The combo, however, did not work out as planned, and Robb was replaced on the morning broadcast by weekend sports anchor Steve Bartelstein.

This new team worked well, and the two were instrumental in reviving “Eyewitness News This Morning,” which had fallen out of favor. They later took over anchoring duties for “Eyewitness News at Noon” once the show regained its top position.
