Qinghua-Professional Career

In April 2012, he joined the HRT Formula 1 Team’s driver development program.

Later that year, when he was chosen as the team’s test driver, he became the first Chinese-born driver in history to sit in a Formula One car at an FIA-sanctioned event.

Later that year, when he replaced Narain Karthikeyan in the first Friday practice session of the 2012 Italian Grand Prix, he became the first Chinese driver to compete in an F1 Grand Prix racing weekend.

Caterham F1 Team asked him to replace Charles Pic in Free Practice 1 at the 2013 Chinese Grand Prix.

He was the first Chinese driver to take part in a practice session in his home Grand Prix.

However, his performance put him so far behind his opponents that he was quickly replaced on the team by Alexander Rossi, and he never competed at the F1 level again.

His lap time began to decline by 2 minutes per lap in the late stages of the Sepang leg of the 2013 GP2 Series, his maiden race in the championship, and he ended in the last position in the main race.

It was later revealed that he was suffering from a severe case of gastroenteritis, which had caused him to become severely dehydrated.

He was ruled medically unfit to compete in the following sprint race.
