Marcus Samuelsson was born on January 25, 1971, in an Ethiopian hamlet to Ethiopian parents.
Following his mother’s death at the age of three, he and his sister, Fantaye Tsegie, were adopted by a Swedish couple.
Marcus studied at the Culinary Institute in Gothenburg (Göteborg) before working as an apprentice in Austria and Switzerland.
Samuelsson went to the United States in 1991 for an eight-month apprenticeship at Restaurant Aquavit.
He left to work on a cruise ship in Sweden at the conclusion of his tenure there, but returned in 1994 to work under the Executive Chef, Jan Sendel.
Jan died just eight weeks later, leaving a vacancy that, predictably, Mr. Samuelsson was selected to fill.
