The first female Austrian architect. Her Frankfurt Kitchen, the prototype for modern built-in kitchens, continued to be emulated long after her death. Margarete Schutte-Lihotzky was born on January 23, 1897 in Austria. She was an activist in opposition to the Nazi regime led by Adolf Hitler. She was also the first female student at the University of Applied Arts Vienna where she came under the tutelage of Josef Hoffmann, Anton Hanak, and Oskar Kokoschka. She also studied with Oskar Strnad, during which time her designs began to win awards.
