He subsequently went to California State University, Northridge (CSUN), where he joined the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. He was chosen as one of four CSUN students to direct a thesis film with a budget of more than $30,000.

Alex, a fellow student who worked with him on the project, had a YouTube channel called ‘Joule Thief.’ He had been laid off from his work at a drugstore around this period, began making YouTube videos with Alex’s help in April 2012, and has never looked back.
