Following that, his club competed in Super Bowl XXXI, where they were defeated by the Green Bay Packers 35-21.

In March 2001, he re-signed a ten-year, $103 million contract with the Patriots. 

He was released by the Bills in 2002 and signed a deal with them. 

Then, in his fourth Pro Bowl appearance, he threw for 4,359 yards and 24 touchdowns.

He later terminated his contract with the Bills during the 2004 season.
