Maureen Tucker Career

Tucker had dropped out of Ithaca College and was working for IBM as a keypunch operator when she was asked to join the Velvet Underground.

Tucker was drafted because Velvets guitarist Sterling Morrison recognized her as the younger sister of Jim, a high school friend who played the drums.

Tucker’s androgynous appearance was frequently noted.

Despite this, Tucker has stated that she was never subjected to sexism during this time.

Aside from drumming, Tucker sang co-lead vocals on three Velvet Underground songs: “After Hours,” an acoustic guitar number, and “The Murder Mystery,” an experimental poetry track from 1969’s The Velvet Underground album, as well as “I’m Sticking with You,” a song recorded in 1969 but left (officially) unreleased until it appeared on the 1985 outtakes compilation VU.

“After Hours” was “so innocent and pure,” according to Lou Reed, that he couldn’t possibly sing it himself.

Tucker used to occasionally play the bass guitar during live shows in the early days, an instrument that was usually played by the band’s regular bassist John Cale. If Cale was unavailable, Morrison would normally play the bass.

However, on some songs, Reed and Morrison played their usual guitars while Cale was busy with viola or keyboards, and as a result, no bass was played: two examples are “Heroin” and “Sister Ray.”
Tucker left the group briefly in early 1970 when she became pregnant with her first child, Kerry “Trucker” Tucker.

Tucker was only able to play on a couple of outtakes for Loaded, the band’s fourth and final album with Lou Reed, due to her pregnancy.

Billy Yule, bassist Doug Yule’s younger and high-school-aged brother, filled in as drummer for live performances and some of the album’s songs.

She played for the band Paris 1942.
