Max Robinson Career
Robinson’s television career began in 1959 when he was hired for a news position at WTOV-TV in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Later, he went to WRC-TV in Washington, DC, where he stayed for three years, winning six journalism awards for his coverage of civil-rights events such as the riots that followed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in 1968.
During this time, Robinson won two regional Emmys for The Other Washington, a documentary he made about black life in Anacostia.
Robinson joined the Eyewitness News team at Washington, D.C.’s WTOP-TV (now WUSA-TV) in 1969.
Robinson was paired with anchor Gordon Peterson, making him the first African-American anchor on a local television newscast, and the newscast took off.
During that time, he was so popular with viewers that when Hanafi Muslims kidnapped hostages at the B’nai B’rith building in Washington, they only spoke to Robinson.
He was the first African-American television news anchor in the nation, as well as one of the first broadcast journalists to lose their lives to AIDS.

From 1963 to 1968, he was married to Eleanor Booker, with whom he had three children: Mark, Maureen, and Michael.
From 1974 to 1975, he was married to Hazel O’Leary.
Robinson’s final marriage, from 1977 to 1986, was to Beverly Hamilton, with whom he had another son, Malik. Robinson was Randall Robinson’s older brother.
