John Dutton, the son of James Dutton, was a small toddler when his family settled in Montana. After months of anticipation, the Duttons have taken over our screens, with the fifth (super-sized) season of Yellowstone over halfway through and the new prequel series 1923 starting on December 18.

When paired with the characters from the preceding prequel, 1883, that’s a lot of Duttons to remember.

The 1883 patriarch, James (Tim McGraw), was a farmer from Tennessee.

Meet James Dutton’s Wife Margaret

Margaret (Faith Hill), James Dutton’s self-assured and stubborn wife, was the head of the Dutton family in 1883.

As a strong Leader and passionately protective mother, she headed off on the trek westward with James and their family, only to settle on a homestead in Montana after the death of their daughter Elsa.

James departed Fort Worth, Texas, with his wife Margaret, their children Elsa and John, his sister Claire, and Claire’s daughter Mary Abel, but the journey was tainted by tragedy.

After Elsa died while they were on the road, John and the rest of his family opted to settle in Montana on what would become the renowned Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

James Dutton Son: Meet John Dutton 

John Dutton, the son of James Dutton and Margaret Dutton, was a small child when his family settled in Montana on what would become the Yellowstone Dutton ranch.

As an adult, he worked alongside his uncle, Jacob Dutton, on the family farm and raised a family with his wife, Emma, and son, Jack.

Furthermore, John Sr. is assumed to be the biological Father of John Dutton Jr., who would be the Father of Yellowstone’s founder, John Dutton III.

Who Is Elsa Dutton, the daughter of James Dutton?

Spirited Elsa (Isabel May), the daughter of James and Margaret Dutton, was the narrator of 1883.

Elsa was a brilliant horseback rider and cowgirl who was passionate and headstrong, much to her mother’s chagrin.

At the age of 17, she and her family boarded a wagon train in pursuit of a new beginning in the West.

Along the way, she met a cowboy named Ennis, and the two fell in love and planned to marry before Ennis was killed by bandits.

Sam, a Comanche warrior who saves Elsa’s life on the trail, later falls in love with her.

Sam felt he couldn’t leave his lands and people, and Elsa agreed to return to him once her family concluded their trek and found a homestead, despite the fact that they both accepted she was his wife.

However, Elsa was hit by an arrow during a retaliatory attack on the wagon train and died as a result of her injuries.

James relocated the rest of their family to Montana, where Elsa died in her honor.
