Pope Benedict XVI’s Health Concerns
On July 17, 2009, while on vacation in the Alps, Benedict fell and broke his right wrist; despite his mild injuries, he was rushed to the hospital.
Following the announcement of Benedict’s resignation, the Vatican revealed that he had a pacemaker inserted while still a cardinal prior to his election as Pope in 2005.
Although the pacemaker’s battery had been replaced three months prior during a routine procedure, this had no bearing on his decision.
