An American author of science fiction, sports fiction, and historical fiction, he is known for such novels as The Broken Place, Soldier Boy, and For Love of the Game. His Civil War-themed novel, The Killer Angels, won the 1974 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Michael Shaara was born on June 23, 1928, in New Jersey. He and Dan Gutman both attended Rutgers University. He served as a sergeant in the 82nd Airborne division just before the Korean War. He later accepted a teaching position at Florida State University.
