Michael Walker Career
Walker was influenced by the piano playing of his father, the singing of his mother, and the guitar playing of his brother.
In Manchester, he formed the jazz fusion band River People with Paul Allen, Tim Franks, and Paul Kilvington.
In the 1980s, he joined a quartet led by vibraphonist Alan Butler, and he collaborated with Michael Gibbs and Kenny Wheeler.
He began his career with Nikki and Richard Iles, then moved on to the Sylvan Richardson band, where he met saxophonist, Iain Dixon.
While performing with Kenny Wheeler’s big band in Zurich, he met Julian Arguelles and joined his quartet.
He toured in bands led by saxophonist Tommy Smith in the 1990s.
He has recorded with George Russell, the Creative Jazz Orchestra, Arild Andersen, Tim Berne, Anthony Braxton, Jacqui Dankworth, Tal Farlow, Bill Frisell, Dave Holland, Vince Mendoza, Bob Moses, Palle Mikkelborg, Mica Paris, John Taylor, Mark-Anthony Turnage, and Norma Winstone.
Walker released his debut album Madhouse and the Whole Thing There in May 2008. Brazil Nuts members are featured, as well as string and brass sections, piano, vocals, and French horn.
Walker was asked to compose music for the Manchester Jazz Festival. At the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, he composed “Ropes,” which was performed by a 22-piece orchestra, a jazz quintet, and Adam Nussbaum on drums.
Les Chisnall, Iain Dixon, Malcolm Edmonstone, Pat Illingworth, and Steve Watts make up Walker’s sextet.
He is a member of The Printmakers, a band founded by Nikki Iles and Norma Winstone that includes Mark Lockheart, Steve Watts, and James Maddren, as well as The Impossible Gentleman, which includes Steve Swallow, Adam Nussbaum, and Gwilym Simcock.
In addition to teaching guitar online, he has taught a music summer school in Altrincham with Iain Dixon and has been a tutor for the National Youth Jazz Collective.
He and Paradise Fears gained attention after opening for All Time Low on their 2011 The Rise and Fall of my Pants Tour.
