Remembered best for his development of a foreign language instructional system known as the Michel Thomas Method, this Holocaust survivor and linguist opened a Beverly Hills, California school called the Polyglot Institute. Michel Thomas was born on February 3, 1914 in Poland. A year before his death, he was awarded the Silver Star for his World War II-era work for the United States Army’s Counter Intelligence Corps. Senators Bob Dole and John Warner presented him with the prestigious honor. While studying at the University of Bordeaux and the Sorbonne, he became involved in the French Resistance movement of World War II and was subsequently sent to several Nazi concentration camps.
