His fellow Ethiopian runner, Haile Gebrselassie, won the 10,000 meters gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. He won the bronze medal at the 1999 World Indoor Championships in Maebashi and later won the 5000 meters silver in the 2001 Edmonton World Championships games.
