McConnell worked as a chief legislative assistant to Senator Marlow Cook in Washington, D.C., from 1968 to 1970.
In February 1975, he was appointed as the United States Assistant Attorney General for Legislative Affairs, a position he held until June 1975.
He was elected Judge/Executive of Jefferson County on December 1, 1977, after defeating incumbent Democrat Todd Hollenbach, III, and was re-elected in 1981 against Jefferson County Commissioner Jim “Pop” Malone.
He held this position until 1985 when he was appointed to the position of United States Senator.
He was elected to the United States Senate in 1985 and has served in that capacity ever since.
