Turkish poet and activist who earned worldwide fame as a lifelong romantic communist who was often persecuted by the Turkish government. His poetry has been translated into more than 50 languages, and his anti-war poem I Come and Stand at Every Door inspired many artists during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Nazim Hikmet Ran was born on January 15, 1902, in Turkey. Pablo Picasso advocated for his release from prison in the 1940s. He studied economics and sociology at the Communist University of the Toilers of the East in the early 1920s. He became greatly influenced by Vladimir Lenin‘s communist ideology.
