Nell Fortner started playing basketball at New Braunfels High School. She then earned a dual basketball and volleyball scholarship at the University of Texas, where she played from 1978 to 1981 under Coach Jody Conradt.

She was a member of the Texas volleyball team that won the AIAW National Championship in 1981. Fortner made her USA Basketball debut as a freshman with the 1978 U.S.

Olympic Festival South team, winning a silver medal. In November 2001, Fortner was inducted into the University of Texas Women’s Athletics Wall of Honor. At the same day, she was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

She has been coaching at the high school, collegiate, professional, and international levels for more than two decades.

Her coaching career began at Killen High School in Killen, Texas. She led the US National Basketball team to gold medals in a number of events, including the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, the Berlin Olympics in 1998, and the William Jones Cup in 1998.

Throughout her tenure, Nell worked as a head coach for the National team, the WNBA, and Auburn, and she guided them to numerous victories.

In April 2004, she was named the fifth head coach in Auburn Tigers women’s basketball history. Fortner guided the US women’s national basketball team to a 101–14 record. She holds the record for the most wins in Women’s USA Basketball history.
