Who is Nicole Gee?

Nicole Gee was a California Marine. She was identified as one of the 13 U.S. Marines and service members killed in the attack at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan. She was recently photographed cradling an infant in Kabul and helping refugees enter an airplane.

Nicole had only recently, on the 21st of August, posted a photo from the mission on Instagram, showing her carrying a baby as she and her fellow service members assisted in the evacuation of refugees. She captioned it, “Kabul, Afghanistan, I love my job.”

Four months into her bereavement, Nicole posted on Instagram, “Missing you comes in waves, but tonight I’m drowning, Ma.” 4 months without you on this planet and only a phone call away.”

Nicole’s surviving family and relatives are now mourning her untimely death. Her father, Richard Herrera, expressed his pride in her. His daughter was always a good student, and “what she did was unexpected.” She was always the best at whatever she did.”

“I assumed she was safe after seeing the attacks.” Then I got the call the next morning that she hadn’t made it.”

Nicole went to Roseville’s Oakmont High School. She graduated in 2016 and was always an A+ student.

Misty Fuoco, Nicole’s two-year-old older sister, also heard the bad news from Nicole’s husband. “He broke the news to me, and I probably stared at him for two minutes, just silent and in disbelief,” said Misty, who had a lot of plans for when Nicole returned.

Nicole has also listed aunts Jaimi Lane Gallez, Cori Webster, Jodi Cantner, and Cheryl Herrera Juels as family members on Facebook, as well as cousins Tia LeeAnn Maldonado, Kamrin Webster-Aplanalp, and Steffani Moody, grandfather Dennis Herrera, and Thorsten Herrera.

Nicole and her husband, Jarod Gee, had officially decided to marry for the rest of their lives on August 17, 2016.

Nicole Gee, a Roseville-based Marine sergeant, had been documenting her time in Afghanistan on her personal Instagram page in the midst of the desperate US-led evacuation efforts. Unfortunately, she was killed in a suicide bombing on August 26, 2021.

It was a tragic loss, and her countrymen and well-wishers mourned her death alongside the loss of other precious lives.

Nicole, along with 12 other US military service members and dozens of Afghans, died that day in an attack at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport, according to a Department of Defense announcement.

Nicole joined the Marine Corps in 2017 and was assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 24, where she maintained ground electronics transmission systems.

So, during her career, the maintenance technician with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit was awarded the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, as well as the National Defense and Global War on Terrorism Service Medals.

Nicole was assigned to recruitment training at Parris Island in South Carolina, the School of Infantry-East at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, the Aviation Accession and Primary Military Occupational Specialty School in Florida, and the Marine Corps Communications-Electronics School in Twentynine in California before being promoted to sergeant and deployed to Afghanistan from Kuwait in early August 2021.

Nicole’s natural ability to assist others had led her to a position in the Marine Corps.

Despite the tragedy, Nicole’s family and friends remain proud of her because they believe she died doing what she loved most. And the outpouring of concern from people all over the world has made the difficult situation bearable.

While honoring the victims, U.S. Congresswoman Doris Matsui, D-Sacramento, described Nicole as a “brave member of our region’s community.”

In addition, the Roseville Joint Union High School District recently issued a statement stating that Nicole’s service to the country will not be forgotten.
