Few people in government were more conservative than Watt, who once referred to the environmental movement as “preservation vs. people” and the general public as a battle between “liberals and Americans.”

Watt was a predecessor of an active Interior Secretary who fought for oil, gas, and coal leases on public lands, increased offshore drilling, and curtailed the establishment of national parks and monuments.

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, he was the worst of MAGA before it existed, referring to former President Donald Trump’s motto “Make America Great Again.”
