Carney told Modern Drummer that he never took drum lessons as a child, but instead learned to follow friends who were also drummers using a $150 drum set he bought with money acquired from a dishwashing job.

The Black Keys were created by Carney and Auerbach, the principal singer and guitarist, and released their debut album The Big Come Up less than a year later. 

Thickfreakness debuted in 2001, Thickfreakness debuted in 2003, and Rubber Factory debuted in 2004. 

Magic Potion, the band’s fourth album, was released in 2006.

Attack & Release, their critically acclaimed fifth album, was released in 2008, followed by Brothers in 2010.
