Paul has been involved in a number of controversies in the United States including racism. He was meant to present an award to the nominees at the BET Comedy Awards in September 2005. Diana Ross received the prize, and when presenting it to her, he made jokes about her DUI arrest in 2002. His remarks upset and embarrassed Diana’s relatives.

He performed at Levity Live in West Nyack, New York on April 20, 2013. The Boston Marathon bombing occurred five days prior to the performance, and he joked about the bombing and how the white people of Boston deserved what they got. Several members of the audience and crew stormed the stage in rage. He then refuted the comments he made on the Opie and Anthony Show on Sirius XM Satellite Radio.

Rashon Khan, Richard Pryor’s ex-bodyguard, spoke up about the molestation allegations in an interview with Comedy Hype in August 2019. She claimed that Paul raped Pryor’s kid when he was a child and that he wanted to kill him. Richard Pryor Junior later confirmed that he had been raped but did not name the perpetrator.

He died in his Oakland, California home on May 19, 2021, at the age of 79. He passed away from a heart attack. His brother revealed that he has prostate cancer in November 2014. He continued, though, to work on his tour and stand-up comedy appearances.
