Most famous for The Wheels on the Bus (published in 1990) and Rapunzel (1997), this popular illustrator and children’s writer received the Caldecott Medal for the latter work. He also illustrated children’s books by Emily Jenkins, Jack Prelutsky, E. Nesbit, and other authors. Paul O Zelinsky was born on February 14, 1953 in Illinois. During the 1980s, he illustrated two books by the famous children’s author Beverly Cleary: Ralph S. Mouse and Dear Mr. Henshaw. While a student at Yale University, he took a children’s book art class taught by Maurice Sendak. After completing further study at Temple University’s Stella Elkins Tyler School of Art, he illustrated his first children’s book, Emily Upham’s Revenge (by Avi), in 1978.
