Late track and field legend best known for coaching the 1968 U.S. Olympic team which won a record 24 medals. He led Occidental College to ten league titles and two NAIA track and field championships. Payton Jordan was born on March 19, 1917, in Whittier, CA. He coached track and field athlete Tommie Smith at the 1968 Olympic Games. He won two national titles as a track and field athlete at the University of Southern California and was a member of the team which set a world record in the 440-yard relay.
