There, plays such as “The Taming of the Shrew,” “The Playboy of the Western World,” “The Glass Menagerie,” “The Importance of Being Earnest,” and “Twelfth Night” were prepared.

He made his Broadway debut in 1955 with “Today Around Evening Time in Samarkand,” and the following year, he earned the Drama Desk Award for “Best Actor” for his off-Broadway performance as “Macbeth,” which was immediately followed by “Romeo and Juliet” as Mercutio.
