His literary honors include the Castagnola Award and a National Endowment for the Arts poetry fellowship. Philip D. Appleman was born on February 8, 1926, in Indiana. He became an expert on Charles Darwin and wrote two poetry collections – Darwin’s Ark and Darwin’s Bestiary – dedicated to the renowned naturalist.
