Philip Hamilton Career
Philip was sent to a boarding school in Trenton, New Jersey, at the age of nine, to study with William Frazer, an Episcopal clergyman and rector of St. Michael’s Church.
For I know you can do a lot if you please, and I am sure you have too much spirit not to exert yourself so that you can make us prouder of you every day.
By 1794, his eight-year-old younger brother Alexander Jr. had joined him at the boarding school.
Philip enrolled at Columbia College, where his knowledge and enthusiasm were compared to his father’s, who was already a well-known alumnus.
Alexander Hamilton’s college roommate, Robert Troup, wrote that Philip “was very promising in genius and acquirements, and Hamilton formed high expectations of his future greatness!”
Despite Hamilton’s certainty that Philip was destined for greatness, Troup privately wrote, “alas Philip is a sad rake and I have serious doubts whether he would ever be an honor to his family or his country.”
In 1800, Philip graduated with honors from Columbia College and went on to study law.
His father prescribed strict study routines, such as getting up at 6 a.m. every day from April to September, and no later than 7 a.m. the rest of the year, after which “he is to read law from the time he is dressed in the morning until nine o’clock (the time for breakfast excluded).”
He challenged George Eacker to a duel after the latter publicly criticized his father at the Fourth of July readings at Columbia University.
He did not die instantly, instead passing from infection following the duel.
