During a horseback riding trip to North and South Carolina in 1982, he met and befriended Eustace Conway.

Eustace Conway, who first landed on the area before later claiming ownership, told Roberts about the Turtle Island Preserve. The preserve is located near Boone, North Carolina, and spans 1,000 acres.

The location gained notoriety as a result of its appearance on the television show “Mountain Men,” which depicted the duo completing chores around the reserve and preparing food to endure the winter. The reserve has faced attention on multiple occasions, the most recent of which resulted in it being temporarily shut down owing to a violation of building codes.

The constructions were later exempted from building codes since they were primitive, and things gradually returned to their natural state.

Preston became a fan favorite of the reality television show “Mountain Men,” which premiered on the History Channel in 2012, despite not being one of the primary cast members.
