Prince Andrew is a member of the Royal Family of the United Kingdom. Prince Andrew is Queen Elizabeth II’s third child and the second son of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Andrew was the second in line to the British throne when he was born. According to a May 2019 poll, he is eighth in line.

On February 19, 1960, Prince Andrew Albert Christian Edward was born in the Belgian Suite of Buckingham Palace as Andrew Albert Christian Edward. 

He is best known as the Duke of York.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Geoffrey Fisher, introduced Prince at the Palace’s Music Room on April 8, 1960.

Andrew was the first child born to a reigning monarch since Queen Victoria’s youngest child, Princess Beatrice, was born in 1857.

Mother’s Demise

His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96, at Buckingham Palace. She dies calmly, a natural death.

Andrew, like his older brother, was cared for by a governess who was in charge of his education at Buckingham Palace. 

They enrolled him at Heatherdown School in Ascot, Berkshire.

In September 1973, he enrolled at Gordonstoun, a school in northern Scotland attended by his father and senior sibling. 

He spent a half year there, from January to June 1977, taking an interest in a trade program at Lakefield College School in Canada.

He graduated from Gordonstoun two years later in July, with A-Levels in English, history, finance, and political theory. 

Prince did not attend university, instead enrolling at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth.

Prince Andrew – Professional Career

Andrew studied at the Royal Naval College Flight in March and April 1979, undertaking pilot training until he was accepted as a trainee helicopter pilot and signed on for 12 years.

The following year, Prince was appointed as a midshipman and enrolled at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth.

In 1980, he also completed the Royal Marines All Arms Commando Course. 

He completed the Dartmouth course and went on to basic pilot training with the Royal Air Force.

Similarly, he received rudimentary flying instruction from the navy at HMS Seahawk, where he learnt to fly the Gazelle helicopter.

Andrew was deployed to RNAS Portland in late 1983, where he received training to operate the Lynx helicopter and was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 February 1984.

As a result, the Queen made him her personal aide-de-camp.

Andrew served as a flight pilot aboard HMS Brazen until 1986, including a deployment to the Mediterranean Sea with Standing NRF Maritime Group 2.

Achievements

In the Royal Navy, Andrew holds the rank of captain and the honorary rank of vice admiral. 

He was an active-duty helicopter pilot and instructor, as well as a battleship captain.

Andrew flew on many missions during the Falkland War, including anti-surface warfare, Exocet missile decoy, and casualty evacuation.

Business, Activities, and Volunteering

Since 1999, Andrew has served as chairman of the Outward Bound Trust, succeeding his father, the Duke of Edinburgh. 

The trust aims to foster leadership traits in youth.

Prince is also the Patron of Fight for Sight, a charity committed to the prevention and treatment of blindness and eye illness, and a member of the Scout Association.

Andrew travels to Canada on a regular basis to perform activities relating to his Canadian military duty.

Andrew became interested in the work of Women’s Interlink Foundation (WIF), a charity that helps women develop skills to earn income while touring India as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012. 

He also helped to raise funds for the Foundation.
