Jones acknowledged to killing Bryant and expressed regret during the trial. Jones’s mental condition and addiction were shown by the Bryant family. He was sentenced to death and spent the next 21 years of his life in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day. Jones’s lawyer, Michael Mowla, filed a Habeas Corpus petition in Texas state court.

Quintin Jones- Trials

Jones’ rights were infringed, he said, because prosecutors offered unscientific testimony during the trial. The death sentence was only permitted in Texas because of “future threat.” Jones has no prior history of violence while inside. Bryant’s family petitioned Texas Governor Greg Abbott for clemency for Jones, with the help of many people and organizations.

They started a petition that received more than 180,000 signatures. After his father begged for forgiveness, Governor Abbott granted clemency to Thomas “Bart” Whitaker, a white male, for the murder of his mother and brother in 2019.

Berthena Bryant’s sister is Mattie Long. They were best friends, and she was the one who was the most affected by her death. “I have forgiven him, I love him very dearly, I can’t bring my sister back, and he can’t either,” she said in her clemency appeal to Governor Abbott. I’m writing to request that you save his life.” His twin brother was Benjamin Jones. “We have long forgiven Quin,” he said in his clemency petition. Please don’t let Quin’s execution turn us into another victim.” Jones asked for mercy as well. He added that he is writing to seek for clemency so that he does not have to be executed on May 19th. “I just have two weeks to live, starting today,” he continued.

Quintin Jones- Response

Due to a communication blunder, media members were not admitted to the prison, making it the first execution without a media presence in at least 40 years. They later apologized and stated that it will not happen again.

“America’s outlook on justice remains broken, brutal, and horrible,” said Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, in a tweet.

The ‘Austin American-Statesman,’ an online news outlet, has emphasized racial unfairness in Jones’ punishment.

They compared Jones to Riky “Red” Roosa, who was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of murdering two people. Jones, a black man, was found guilty of one murder and condemned to death.
