Ralph Shearer Northam (born September 13, 1959) is an American politician and physician who has served as Virginia’s 73rd Governor since January 13, 2018. From 1984 until 1992, he served as an officer in the United States Army Medical Corps as a pediatric neurologist.

Northam, a Democrat, served as Virginia’s 40th Lieutenant Governor from 2014 to 2018, before winning the governorship over Republican opponent Ed Gillespie in the 2017 election.

On September 13, 1959, Ralph Northam was born in the village of Nassawadox on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

He and his two-year-old elder brother, Thomas, were reared on a water-side farm in Onancock, Virginia.

On their 75-acre (30-hectare) ranch, the family produced a variety of crops and raised cattle.

Northam worked as a youngster on a ferry to Tangier Island and as a deckhand on fishing expeditions.

He also worked on a neighbor’s farm and as a “stock boy” at Maitland.

He and Thomas attended desegregated public schools, according to his schooling.
