Ralph Tresvant: Birth, Parents & Siblings

Tresvant, Ralph Tresvant was born as Ralph Edward Tresvant Sr. on May 16, 1968, in the Roxbury section of Boston, Massachusetts, to Patricia and Ralph Edward Tresvant, Sr. Rizzo loved music from a young age, a passion he shared with his younger siblings.

Ralph Tresvant: Professional Career

Ralph Tresvant would frequently sing at school, and by his junior high school year, he had become a member of the New Edition, a boy band.

Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, and Michael Bivins were the original members of the group. The trio would perform at local shows, and one of their performances at a local talent show drew the attention of Brooke Payne, a young songwriter, and producer.

Payne came up with the name New Edition for the group, claiming that he wanted them to be the “newer edition” of the Jackson 5.

However, the boys were later signed by the Streetwise Records label, which is owned by Maurice Starr. The group would then be joined by Starr’s nephew Ronnie DeVoe, bringing the total to four.

New Edition rose to prominence quickly thanks to the success of their debut album Candy Girl (1983). It spawned a number of hit singles, including “Popcorn Love” and “Is This the End.”

Despite switching labels from Streetwise to MCA, New Edition remained a hit due to Tresvant’s voice, which had become the group’s trademark. New Edition released three albums in a row from 1983 to 1986, followed by another in 1988.

The success of New Edition aided her members’ solo careers, but an introverted Tresvant was the last to declare a solo career.

When he finally emerged from his shell to release his debut self-titled solo album, it was a huge success, spawning a single that spent weeks at the top of the R&B charts.

Ralph Tresvant formed another band, Heads of State, with former bandmate Bobby Brown in 2008. Tresvant is still singing with New Edition and working on new music to this day.

To make matters worse, he was in the midst of a bitter divorce with his then-wife Shelly.
