Vander Laan’s That the World May Know films began in 1992 when Michigan entrepreneur Ed Prince became acquainted with Ray’s unique method of Bible teaching.

Ray is fondly referred to as RVL. He has always believed that in order to fully comprehend and appreciate the Bible, people must first understand the land and culture from which it arose.

Biblical analogies and examples were originally intended to communicate God’s truth to specific people in a specific time and place.

They are still meaningful and useful today. The more fully people can appreciate those times and places, according to Ray, the more fully they can respond to the power of the Word.

In 1992, Ed Prince generously offered to fund the creation of a film series to capture Ray’s teachings and make them available to a wider audience.

The film director, Bob Garner, was secured, massive cameras were shipped to Israel, and the first five sets were produced, but the broader church devoured them.

Focus On The Family experienced a hunger for the series that they had never seen before.

The hunger has persisted. Garner and John Grooters co-directed Sets 6 and 7 in 2003, and the style of the films became much more consistent with the experience of an actual Ray trip.

Later, the programs were converted to HD and shot in 16 x 9 aspect ratios. The teachings extended beyond Israel, taking viewers to Galatia, Cappadocia, Laodicea, Ephesus, and other biblical sites in modern Turkey.
