Professional Career of Rod Gilbert

After finishing his junior career with the Guelph Royals, Gilbert joined the Rangers near the end of the 1960–61 NHL season.

He soon gained a following among Rangers supporters and ascended to prominence as an NHL legend.

In 1965–66, he had a second spinal fusion surgery, which nearly ended his career.

Gilbert was injured for half of the season, but he returned in 1966–67 and scored 28 goals.

On February 24, 1968, he scored four goals against the Montreal Canadiens.

The Rangers retired his number 7 on October 14, 1979, making it the team’s first number to be retired.

He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982 and was the first player on the Rangers’ roster to have his number retired.

He was chosen president of the Rangers Alumni Association after his playing career.
