Romelu Lukaku is a devout Christian. He is, more specifically, a devout Roman Catholic.
Previously, British tabloids reported that he was a ‘devout Muslim.’
Lukaku is not shy about exhibiting his faith in public, and he is frequently seen praying before or after games.
He visited Lourdes, a popular Catholic pilgrimage site, in 2014. He also does not drink.
The fervent believer blends his faith into his goals and triumph celebrations.
At the end of a Belgium-Panama match, Lukaku got down on his knees and prayed next to Fidel Escobar, a Panamanian player who is an Evangelical Christian.
The two players exchanged outstretched arms hoisted toward heaven in front of the world’s media, which is the earliest symbol of Christian prayer.
The image, predictably, went viral. Lukau was born in Belgium to Catholic Congolese parents.
Despite growing up in poverty, he never lost faith. “I was six years old at the time… We didn’t have enough money to last the entire week.
“We weren’t just poor; we were broke,” stated Lukaku.
But he clung to hope and promised God that he would make things better for his mother and family.
Romelu is a committed Christian. “He’s always trying to thank God,” his father, Roger Lukaku, explained.
He also stated that his child prays 10 to 15 times a day, frequently in private.
