He was released on $100,000 bail while awaiting trial.
However, he was apprehended by US Marshals Service officers in May 2015
after a warrant was issued out of Harris County on accusations of failing to appear for a court date.
According to sources, he had suicidal thoughts. While in prison, he began exhibiting evident acts of insanity and claimed to be “Jesus Christ.”
Russell was accused of “acting insane” in order to avoid his murder trial, according to the prosecution.
Russell, on the other hand, was judged mentally unable to stand trial
after several consecutive competence hearings, and the court ordered him to undergo counseling.
Russell, who was in his late forties as of 2023, has remained a patient in Rusk State Hospital in Texas.
