Best remembered as the sister of United States Civil War-era President Abraham Lincoln, she helped raise her famous younger brother after their mother died in 1818. Sarah Lincoln Grigsby was born on February 10, 1807 in Kentucky. Her brother Abraham Lincoln, one of the most important presidents in United States history, issued the famous Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and ultimately abolished slavery by pushing for the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment. She grew up in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and Spencer County, Indiana, as the first child and only daughter of Nancy and Thomas Lincoln.
