Sean Paul: Birth, Parents, & Education

Sean Paul was born on January 9, 1973, in Kingston, Jamaica, to Garth and Frances Henriques.

His ethnicity is a little complicated. His paternal grandfather is of Portuguese descent, and his paternal grandmother is of Afro-Caribbean descent. His mother is English, Chinese, and Jamaican.

Garth Henriques, his father, died on May 24th, 2018 after spending two months in the hospital with an undisclosed illness. Frances Henriques, his mother, is a well-known painter.

Paul comes from a swimming family; in fact, it appears that everyone in the family has an inborn talent for swimming.

His grandfather was a member of the first Jamaican men’s national water polo team, his father competed in long-distance swimming and water polo for the same team in the 1960s, and his mother was a butterfly swimmer.

The now-famous international dancehall singer was not left out of the family tradition/talent; he also played for the national water polo team from the age of 13 to the age of 21.

He attended Wolmer’s Boys’ School and the College of Arts, Science, and Technology (now the University of Technology), where he studied commerce with the intention of pursuing a career in swimming, but he had to abandon that potential career choice in order to pursue a career in music. Sean Paul was raised a devout Catholic.

Sean Paul: Professional Career

Sean tried his hand at other things before fully committing to music. He worked as a bank teller as well as a chef in a nearby restaurant.

His musical career began in the late 1990s when he was discovered by Jeremy Harding’s brother (Jeremy Harding would later become Paul’s manager and producer), who told Jeremy that he heard someone who sounded exactly like famous dancehall DJ and toaster Super Cat while at a small open mic event in Kingston.

When they (Paul and Harding) finally met, it was a meeting that would forever change the life of the young aspiring singer. The meeting gave birth to the song Baby Girl, followed by his first cameo appearance in the 1998 film Belly. He also worked on the soundtrack with DMX and Mr Vegas.

With VP Records, he released his debut album, Stage One, in 2000. The album quickly rose to the number two spot on the Top Reggae Album charts.

In 2002, he released his second album, Dutty Rock, which featured major hits such as Gimme the Light and Get Busy. The album was a huge success, selling over six million copies worldwide.

Gimme the Light peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, Get Busy was nominated for Best Rap Song of the Year at the Grammys, and the album itself won Reggae Album of the Year at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards in 2004.

Soon after, he was heard on the single Baby Boy, which reached number one in the United States that year, and then on Blu Cantrell’s Breathe – these collaborations are thought to have boosted his fame and reputation in the United States and around the world.

He has also worked with well-known artists such as, Akon, Keyshia Cole, and many others.

Sean Paul appeared in three successful hit singles by British girl group Little Mix, Australian singer and songwriter Sia, and British band group Clean Bandit in 2016.

He performed at the Pakistan Super League opening ceremony in 2016 and the 2018 UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv, Ukraine.
