Semmy Schilt: Professional Career

He began his career at a young age and attained the rank of black belt at the age of 18. He made his MMA debut in 1996 for the Japanese promotion Pancrase.

He competed against Pancrase co-founder Masakatsu Funaki in 1997. The two fighters then fought for a few minutes before Funaki led him to the ground.

Similarly, he had fought Minoru Suzuki, the other co-founder of Pancrase, in 1998. He had fought with the Japanese wrestler who had taken Schilt to the mat and maintained side control for half of the match.

Schilt made his debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 2001, and after finishing his UFC tenure, he returned to Japan for the PRIDE Fighting Championship, where he made his debut the following year.

In 2002, he faced Fedor Emelianenko while making his PRIDE debut in Fighting Network RINGS. He had competed in the annual event Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye for a rematch against Josh Barnett at the end of 2003.

In 2005, he began his kickboxing career and competed in his first K-1 finals. He defeated Ray Sefo in the quarterfinals and knocked out Remy Bonjasky in the semifinals. Similarly, he defeated Ray Sefo by second-round KO in 2007 to become K-1’s first Super Heavyweight Champion.

That same year, he faced and defeated K-1 Hawaii GP Champion Mighty Mo. In 2008 and 2009, he lost two consecutive matches to Peter Aerts and Badr Hari.

However, in 2010, he successfully defended his fourth title against teammate Errol Zimmerman. He had won a close decision over Hesdy Gerges after sustaining a cut to his shin in the fight that required four stitches.

In 2012, he entered the ring with a new style and the goal of defeating Guidon and Zimmerman convincingly.

However, it was reported in 2013 that due to his heart condition, he was immediately instructed to retire.
