Sergey Shoygu is a Russian politician and army general who now serves as the Russian Federation’s Minister of Defence. Despite this, Shoigu has been a member of the CIS Council of Ministers of Defense for nearly a decade. Prior to these positions, he served as Minister of Emergency Situations from 1991 to 2012 and briefly as Governor of Moscow Oblast in 2012.

Sergey Shoygu- Professional Career
Shoygu temporarily worked on building projects after graduating in 1977. Shoygu was awarded the position of minor functionary in the Abakan branch in 1988, following which he was given another position for Komsomol, which he held for a few years longer. Shoygu moved to Moscow from Siberia in 1990 and was appointed Deputy Chief of the Russian Federation’s State Architecture and Construction Committee.
Shoigu was appointed as the head of the Rescuer Corps in 1991, after which he was granted further responsibility and renamed as the first person to the State Committee on Emergencies, which later became the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
For a brief period, he rose to prominence and became one of the most popular military men due to his hands-on management style amid calamities such as floods, earthquakes, and terrorist attacks. Later that year, Shoigu was appointed as the party’s leader, making him one of the most prominent figures in Russia’s pro-government Unity party.
Later, he received Russia’s most prestigious official award, the Hero of the Russian Federation. Shoigu was named the most likely candidate for Governor of Moscow Oblast in March 2012.

Later, on 5th April 2012, he was elected by the Moscow Oblast Duma, and he became the 3rd Governor of Moscow Oblast on 11th May 2012. Putin appointed Shoigu to the role of Minister of Defence in November 2012.
In July 2014, he was charged with a criminal offense for allegedly assisting “illegal military formations” affiliated with the Ukrainian Army in Eastern Ukraine. Later, in 2018, he was reappointed to the government position of Medvedev’s second administration, and in 2020, he was appointed to the Mishustin government.
