She and her fellow Girls’ Generation member, Kwon Yuri, also attended Chung-Ang University.
When she was in fifth grade, Sooyoung auditioned for SM Entertainment during an open audition.
She won first place in the Korea-Japan Ultra Idol Duo Audition in 2002.
This led to her joining the musical duet Route with Marina Takahashi, and they made their formal debut in Japan.
Route dissolved in 2003 after three singles were released, and Sooyoung returned to South Korea and signed with SM Entertainment.
In August 2007, she made her formal debut with the South Korean girl group Girls’ Generation.
She has a penchant for acting as well as singing, and before her debut as a singer, she had given over 70 auditions but was rejected each time.
Sooyoung has worked on a variety of music and acting endeavors outside of Girls’ Generation.
She is also involved in philanthropy and has hosted many ‘Beaming Effect’ auctions.
