Soumaya Domit: Birth, Parents & Siblings

Carlos Slim’s late wife, a descendant of Lebanon’s Gemayel family, was born in Mexico City in 1948. Her ancestors are from a Lebanese warlord clan known for losing their dignity during Lebanon’s civil war in 1975.

She was born into the Domit Dib and Gemayel Domit families of Antonio Domit Dib and Lily Gemayel Domit.

Soumaya Domit was allegedly raised with four siblings, but only one – her brother Michel Domit Gemayel – is well-known to the general public.

This aspect of her heritage was only discovered many years after she died, which is not surprising given that her marriage to a world-class business magnet received all of the attention.

Soumaya Domit was caught off guard by the media after her marriage to Carlos Slim Hel, a business mogul who owns millions of shares in several Mexican companies.

Carlos is also the CEO of Telmex, América Móvil, and his conglomerate Grupo Carso, through which he controls a large number of Mexican companies and resources.

In 2010, Forbes named him the world’s richest person, a position he held until 2013.

He is currently the fifth richest person in the world (2019 estimate), but he is still the richest person in Latin America, thanks to his net worth of $63.1 billion.

Soumaya Domit was the ideal wife for her husband while they were married. She backed his business ventures in any way she could, especially the philanthropic moves he made to give back to society.

One of the humanitarian projects in which she was involved was the establishment of a legal framework for organ donation. Soumaya’s influence on society persisted even after her death.

In her honor, her husband established Museo Soumaya, a private museum, in 2011. The non-profit organization is housed in two buildings in Mexico City: Plaza Carso and Plaza Loreto.

Soumaya and Carlos met through mutual friends’ mothers; Lily Gemayel Domit died in 1998, a year before her daughter.

Soumaya Domit and Carlos Slim Hel, both Maronite Christians of Lebanese descent, met in 1964. The savvy businessman was 24 at the time, while she was still in her teens.

They grew up in the same neighborhood, just a few streets apart, and their families were brought together by their mothers, who were friends with Lebanese-Mexican ancestors.

Carlos and Soumaya clearly fell in love, as they married in 1966. Following their wedding, the couple went on a 40-day honeymoon around the world. They traveled to places such as England, Greece, Naples, Spain, New York, and France.

The time they spent together must have played a significant role in strengthening their bond and resulting in the birth of their first child, a son named Carlos Slim Domit.

Following the birth of the first child in 1967, the family grew even larger with the addition of five more children.

They had two more sons, Patrick and Marco Antonio, as well as three daughters, Soumaya (named after her mother), Vanessa, and Johanna.

Emiliano Slim Torruco, Carlos Slim Torruco, and Marielle Slim are among the grandchildren.

It was a peaceful home for the Slims until their matriarch died of kidney complications in 1999. Soumaya Domit was 51 years old when she died.
