Steve Nieve – Professional Career

Nieve’s career began in 1977 when he dropped out of college to join a band called “The Attractions.”

On most of Costello’s projects and albums, including ‘This Year’s Model,’ ‘Imperial Bedroom,’ and ‘Blood & Chocolate,’ Steve played the piano, organ, and other keyboard instruments.

When Steve was in the band, he even collaborated with his then-girlfriend, Fay Hart, on The Attractions’ Costello-less record, Mad About the Wrong Boy, under the moniker Norman Brain.

However, the band began to work less together later on.

So, in 1986, Nieve formed the Perils of Plastic with ex-Deaf School vocalist Steve Allen, releasing three non-charting singles in the UK in 1986 and 1987, while also leading the house band on the UK TV series The Last Resort with Jonathan Ross, billed as Steve Nieve and The Playboys.

The Attractions reunited in 1994 for the album ‘Brutal Youth,’ but they didn’t last long, breaking up in 1996.

But the Costello/Nieve collaborations continued; they toured as a pair, and Nieve contributed keyboards to all of Costello’s albums since the mid-1990s, including the Burt Bacharach collaboration ‘Painted From Memory’ in 1998.

Costello

Nieve began performing with Costello’s new backing band in 2001. Elvis Costello & the Imposters, as they were termed, toured widely and released the albums When I Was Cruel, Cruel Smile, The Delivery Man, The River in Reverse with Allen Toussaint, and Momofuku.

He recorded an album with his wife, Muriel Téodori, in 2007.

‘Welcome to the Voice’ was the title of the album.

It is a bilingual opera with an original scenario and libretto. ToGetHer, his debut album, was published in 2014.
