Later, she co-wrote and produced the independent film Stony Island with Andrew Davis.

In 1980, Tamar was admitted to the prestigious AFI Directing Workshop for Women.

The Haircut, a short comedy starring John Cassavetes, was an official selection of the 1983 Cannes Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, and Sundance Film Festival, and received a Sundance Institute commendation from Robert Redford.

Hoffs became the first woman to hold the triple director/writer/producer title with The Allnighter, a major studio feature film.
