Her presence affected her decision to pursue a political career. In 2006, Duckworth runs for Congress but loses by a razor-thin margin.

She went on to become the Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs, which she held until 2009.

The following year, President Barack Obama appointed her to the position of Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs.

Tammy left her job in June 2011 to run for the United States House of Representatives in Illinois’ 8th congressional district.

Duckworth was the first disabled woman elected to the House of Representatives in the United States.
